Education boards in India primarily govern the syllabus, examination pattern, and curriculum of various schools in the country.

There are different education boards in India. Every school in the country is affiliated to a board on the list of education boards in India.

What Is the Importance of Education Boards in India?

Education boards in India play the role of a governing body for schools. Apart from fixing the curriculum and syllabus for the school, the boards are also responsible for decision-making on a macro level.

The recent pandemic threw more light on the role of education boards in India. The 10th and 12th board examinations could not be conducted because of the pandemic situation.

Therefore, each board was entrusted with the responsibility of devising new ways of calculating the 10th and 12th pass percentages for students.

The different education boards in India gave explicit instructions to schools affiliated with it regarding calculating students’ 10th and 12th board examinations for the year 2020.

In the year 2021 also, education boards in India have taken decisive steps regarding board examinations.

Therefore, it is evident that education boards in India play an important role in the education system of the country.

There are different education boards in India. Each of these boards formulates well-crafted curriculums for the affiliated schools.

Types of Education Boards in India

Concerning how many education boards in India? There are four types of education boards in India.

However, through this article, we will elaborate on a few more different education boards in India apart from the main four boards.

1. State Board

State boards as the name suggests are education boards in India that are more local. They differ from state to state and cater to the needs of students of that state. Almost all states in the country have their state education board.

State boards are unique to each state and follow different patterns, curriculums, syllabus, and evaluations procedures.

The curriculum is more local giving importance to the state language as the second language preference.

2. Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE)

This is also a popular board from the list of recognised education boards in India. CBSE affiliated schools are present all over the country.

The curriculum of CBSE-affiliated schools is more comprehensive making it a more pan India type of education.

3. Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE)

The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations has two boards that conduct examinations under ICSE and ISC boards.

Close on the lines of CBSE affiliated schools, are ICSE schools. It is a private school education board in India and like CBSE, emphasizes a pan India curriculum.

4. International Baccalaureate (IB)

Considered as one of the elite education boards in India, schools affiliated with the IB education board in India are usually internationally oriented.

The IB board is headquartered in Geneva, unlike state boards, CBSE and ICSE boards which are headquartered within the country.

National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

The examinations conducted by this board are usually taken by students who are homeschooled or in distance education programs.

The main objective of NIOS is to provide an opportunity to various sections of students. It provides students from rural sectors and different backgrounds a chance to complete secondary-level examinations.

This type of education board in India is popular amongst students from the rural section who do not have access to physically attend state-run or private institutions.

Cambridge International Examinations

Recognised worldwide, this education board in India is a high-end education board in India. This type of education board in India is popular amongst students who have clarity on wanting to study in a foreign university.

Which Education Board in India Is the Best?

There is no clear-cut answer to this question. The answer lies mostly in the type of education you wish to receive. While some boards focus more on theory like state boards, the other boards like ICSE focus on practical training.

Choosing the right board also depends on what kind of career you wish to pursue. Different education boards in India cater to different curricula and syllabi that lay the foundation for different careers.

There are advantages and disadvantages in all the education boards in India. However, choosing a board that provides an all-around development for the students is the best choice.

Keep in mind that the holistic development of the student is as important as a completely academically oriented student.
