What is the NEET exam?
Initially known as the All-India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT), the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET exam 2024 is an all-India entrance exam that precedes a candidate’s admission into a medicine course. It is the national qualifying examination that secures aspiring candidates seats into medical institutions across India for various streams as that of MBBS, BDS and AYUSH. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the results of the test are passed onto the Directorate General of Health Services under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and State Counselling Authorities for seat allocation.
The NEET exam is one that has replaced all the different exams conducted in various state levels. The exam is one of the largest in India when it comes to registered applicants. In 2019, with the enactment of the NMC Act 2019, NEET-UG was declared the only entrance test to be conducted for admissions into colleges across India including All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER).
