  • What Is Mechanical Engineering?
  • History of Mechanical Engineering
  • Development of Mechanical Engineering
  • Types of Mechanical Engineering Degrees
  • Highest Paying Mechanical Engineering Jobs.

Before we head out to list some of the top mechanical engineering jobs, it is important to understand what exactly is mechanical engineering and what it entails.

What Is Mechanical Engineering?

Machines today play an important role in the economy. Without machines, mass production would not be possible. Without mass production, the economy would not grow. Therefore the creation of new mechanical systems is of utmost importance for any country.

Apart from contributing to mass production, machines have reduced costs of production and minimized heavy expenditure on labour.

Therefore, designing and creating machinery is an important aspect of the growth of any nation. The growth in the economy of a nation is directly proportional to the industrial output.

Now that we have seen the importance of machines for an economy, we know the importance of mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineers are those who design and create machines for various purposes.

Every manufacturing industry requires machines to sustain themselves in the business. The more machines an industry uses, the more the industry can produce or manufacture within a given single period of time.

Mechanical engineering is that branch of engineering that deals with the design and creation and manufacturing of effective machines.

It is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It combines the theory of physics and mathematics to design and create mechanical systems.

History of Mechanical Engineering

Without actually terming them as mechanical engineers, we can say that the profession of mechanical engineering existed in the ancient world.

For example, the invention of the wheel and axle mechanism and the use of pulleys and scales during ancient times are all machines developed by what we call mechanical engineers today.

Mechanical engineering existed all over the world in some form or the other. With inventions of machines slowly taking over the manual work of the masses.

Mechanical Engineering Today

With the advent of technology, and the increase in inter-country trade and commerce there is a need for mass production of goods. The design and creation of machines has never been more important than it is today.

Mechanical engineering now is one of the most sought-after engineering courses. Students also get some of the highest-paying jobs with a mechanical engineering degree. With mechanical engineering as your background, it is possible to have a soaring career.

Elements of Mechanical Engineering

Although broadly, mechanical engineering is the development of machines, there are many other elements that are included in mechanical engineering.

  • Structural elements- bearings, axles, wheels, and other elements
  • Process or operation
  • Controlling elements like switches and buttons

Therefore, a mechanical engineer’s job includes all the design and creation of all the elements of a machine. A mechanical engineer must be well versed in all the components that lead to the working of a machine.

Types of Mechanical Engineering Degrees

As discussed above, mechanical engineering is made up of various components. Under the broad head of mechanical engineering, there are several other branches that form a part of mechanical engineering. Let’s look at these different types of mechanical engineering:

1. Marine Engineering

marine engineers

As the name marine engineering suggests, this type of mechanical engineering involves the design and development of water sustainable vehicles like ships, submarines, and boats among others.

2. Mechatronics Engineering

Mechatronics engineering is a combination of mechanical engineering and electronics. This branch of engineering deals with the design of machines that are used as smart systems like robots.

3. Automotive Engineering

Like marine engineering, this type of engineering deals with the design and manufacturing of road or land vehicles.

4. Aerospace Engineering

This popular type of mechanical engineering is concerned with the manufacture of air space vehicles.

Highest Paid Mechanical Engineering Jobs

The different types of mechanical engineering courses secure some of the highest paid mechanical engineering jobs around the world.

There are several jobs that employ the skills of mechanical engineers. Here is a list of some of the high salary mechanical engineering jobs.

1. Instrumentation Engineer

When it comes to precise calculations, it is important to have instruments that measure accurately. An instrumentation engineer is concerned with the design of measuring instruments that are used in other industries.

An instrumentation engineer is likely to earn around Rs 5,00,000 per annum. However, the pay scale differs according to the experience of the candidate and other factors.

2. Automation Engineer

Automation Engineer

Another highest paid mechanical engineering job is that of an automation engineer. As the name suggests, an automation engineer is concerned with automating instruments and mechanisms.

They are involved with the automation of manufacturing processes. Automation engineers try to convert manual processes into automatic processes to reduce the dependence on manual work.

An automation engineer can earn more than Rs 5,50,000 per annum.

3. Powertrain Systems Engineer

Powertrain engineers are engineers who work with the power of components of vehicles such as the engine, shaft, and axles.

A powertrain engineer in India can earn around Rs 5,50,000 per annum.

4. Senior Mechanical Engineer

A senior mechanical engineer is one of the most sought-after jobs and one of the highest paying jobs with a mechanical engineering degree. The role of a mechanical engineer is versatile.

A mechanical engineer is responsible for the design and development of mechanical systems. Mechanical systems are required in every industry that is why mechanical engineers are in high demand, today.

A mechanical engineer’s role does not stop at developing machines but also includes improvements of existing machines.

The average salary of a senior mechanical engineer in India is around 7, 28000 per annum.

5. Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Similar to the role of a mechanical engineer a senior mechanical design engineer is concerned with creating and developing new products in the market.

A senior mechanical design engineer has a big role of coordinating all departments of engineering, end-users, and the sales department.

In India the average salary of a mechanic design engineer is around Rs 7,00,000/-.

Conclusion

Mechanical engineers have some of the highest-paid mechanical engineering jobs in the world. This is because of the requirement of automated systems and mechanical systems in every industry.

The industrial revolution has given rise to an increase in demand for machines and thereby mechanical engineers.

Mechanical engineering courses are available in almost all engineering colleges around the globe.
