What is flexibility? The importance of being flexible, tips to be flexible in life
“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” ― Albert Einstein
Flexibility will enable students to escape a difficult situation if they find themselves in one. Like water taking any form, the ability to adapt lets us survive almost any condition. However, living without flexibility in our actions or vision will create a severe disadvantage for us in the world.
It is common to think that if we, as students, have control over anything, then our environment is steady. But control is an illusion for chaos is the only constant in the universe. The ideal student is someone who will not accept no for an answer, but long-term problems might arise when students strive to control everything. Many people find it hard to be flexible in life. One cannot avert the rise of unexpected situations and the frustrations it creates.
It can also make a person lash out. However, staying rigid can prevent you from getting what you want in turn leading to more frustration because things ain’t working the way you want.
Life is full of challenges and problems. Random tests are presented to students frequently. But if we can’t adapt to the situation then it becomes really hard to overcome the issue and reach one’s goal. It may also make it difficult for us to enjoy life. Thus, having a flexible mind is essential since it enables students to maintain their composure in a variety of scenarios. It makes it easier for us to handle challenges and get through trying circumstances as students.
Things change, but if we can adapt like a sniper in hostile areas, we as students may still achieve our goals even though we are in a challenging circumstance. True power comes from flexibility and not rigidity. Being flexible is like any martial art. It’s not being on the offensive, but rather using the opponent’s offense to your advantage. For example, Jiu-Jitsu is completely based on reacting to your opponent.
Similarly, being flexible is not taking the problem head-on. Instead, you react in a way that brings about the best results and this requires adaptability. In life, too many things happen to us simultaneously of which some will be good and some bad. But if one is flexible in thought and action, then they also know what true happiness is?
Life without an aim or goal is pointless, but trying to constantly force one’s will is counterproductive. It only leads to exhaustion and excruciating futility. It is always advisable to be adaptable in order to tackle a problem strategically rather than attacking it head-on, regardless of whether you as a student are choosing the popular path or the path less travelled to attain your goal. So, if you want to reach success via flexibility, then here are some ways to develop adaptability in life.
Tips to Adopt Flexibility in Life
1. Start Small
Flexibility isn’t achieved overnight. It’s not like you are going to do 20 push-ups on the first rep. But you can definitely start with 2 or 5 push-ups. Likewise, try something new during your free time. Come out of your comfort zone and go to a new place for lunch. This will expose you to a new atmosphere as a student, and you’ll gradually learn how to handle any unforeseen changes in plans or an unexpected invitation.

Accept What Can’t Be Changed
Mental flexibility is essential to achieve success in life and the first step to becoming more mentally flexible is to accept the things that are beyond our control. This is necessary because when living in rigidity, we try to control everything. But this sense of control is a false sense of security which only leads to frustration. However, by acknowledging that some things are beyond our control, students can let go of fears and annoyances that are dependent on a fictitious sense of control.

Live in The Present
A person worrying over his past or future has lost his present. Past has passed you by and the future is inevitable. However, the present is here and now. So, to become flexible, one will have to develop a sense of present-moment awareness. As a student, staying in the moment helps you avoid getting into an accident when someone cuts you off on the road. Only by being in the present can you bury your past and build for your future.
