The National Institute of technology Suratkal is a Government of India undertaking. The college is one of the oldest technological institutions in southern India and is rated as one of the best technological institutions in Karnataka.

The National Institute of Technology Suratkal has a separate procedure for companies that seek campus recruitments and campus placements.
Companies require to register online in order to gain access for placements and recruitments.
Once companies have registered, the Career placement cell of the college shall send an invite to the company.

The civil engineering department has a recognised QIP centre for training of faculty from other colleges. The college department takes up R &D work and industrial consultancy services.
The mechanical engineering department was started along with the inception of the college in 1960. The department churns out more than 600 mechanical engineers annually.
The department was started in 1979 at National Institute of Technology Suratkal. The Department is also a recognized center under the Quality Improvement Program (QIP) of the Government of India. The department projects are funded by the Ministry of Human resources and Development, Government of India and other such bodies. Additionally the department is involved as a consultant with the Indian Railways and other Public Sector Banks.
The department of Electrical and Electronics was started along with the initial establishment of the college in 1960. The post graduate program was started in 1992. The department is actively involved in research and receive funding from various companies like Texas Instruments, Schneider Electric, L&T. Campus placements from the department are high.
The Department of Chemical Engineering in National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal was started in the year 1965. The college has good infrastructure when it comes to space and modern instruments. Funds for college development come from various Government bodies like Ministry of HRD, GOI, TEQIP,TIFAC-CORE, DST,DBT and CSIR. The department offers under graduate program in Chemical Engineering and three post graduate programs with specializations in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Technology and Industrial Biotechnology.
The computer Science engineering department was started in 1986. The Department offers B.Tech., M.Tech., M.Tech.(By Research) and Ph.D. courses in Computer Science and Engineering. The Department engages students in various research activities. The department has signed Memorandum of Understanding with IBM, Intel, Leeds Metropolitan University and others, for academic purposes.
The department was established in the year 2000 at the National Institute of Technology Mangalore. The department is involved in several research & consultancy projects as part of various grants/MoUs with reputed industries and organizations.
The Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department was started in the early days of the inception of the college in 1965. The department has an association that oversees the activities of the students. The department has a separate library housing more than 750 books and journals for reference. The Indian Institute of Metals regularly conducts workshops and training programs for the students of this department.
The department came in to existence in 1984. The Department also offers M.Tech (Research) programme in Rock Excavation Technology and Management and Ph.D in Mining Engineering. Students from this department visit foreign universities to present research papers. The department receives grants from The Hutti Gold Mines Company, Uranium Corporation of India and Neyveli Lignite Corporation for instituting Gold Medals to the best outgoing students of Mining Engineering.
The Central Library has a large collection of books journals and magazines. The library has been fully digitalised to provide e access of books to students. The library has a separate website launched for the convenience of students. The library was established in 1960. The college also gives library access to institutions and industries located in and around Mangalore.
The college has a full fledged physical and sports education department. Both indoor and outdoor sports amenities are available in the college campus. The college has various sports teams that represent the college in various sports activities. The Following are the sports activities in NITK
There are about more than 120 laboratories on the campus in keeping with the syllabi and curriculum of the various departments.
The classrooms are spacious and well ventilated. All classrooms are fitted with audio visual aids and other modern amenities.
There are four guest houses within the campus. These guest houses serve as residence facilities for guest lecturers and visitors to the campus.
The college has shopping centres for the students. The shopping complex include bakery, stationery, clothes, tailoring, salon, vegetables, laundry among other services. All these are for the convenience of students within the campus. The aim is to make the college campus self-sustaining.
The campus has two canteen and four cafeterias that serve hygienically clean and nutritious food.
NITK has an open-air theatre for student activities and programs.
National Institute of Technology Suratkal has two banks that function within the campus. Canara Bank and State bank of India. These banks have in campus ATM facilities.
There is a large auditorium with a seating capacity for over 1200 students. The Auditorium is used for multipurpose activities.
As the College is a residential college, the hostels are located within the campus. There are separate hostels for boys and girls. Hostels have all modern facilities for the convenance of students.
The central computing centre has largely contributed to the advancement of Information Technology for the institute. The Central Computing Centre provides IT solutions to the academic needs of the college.
Students seeking Admission to NITK is managed by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) based on the scores obtained in Joint Entrance Examination (JEE - Main) conducted by National Testing Agency.
JoSAA has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development to manage and regulate the joint seat allocation for admissions to various institutes.
The candidate must have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards are eligible to appear the JEE-Main and secure the admission.
For SC/ST students the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.
Non Resident Indians or foreign student or Person of Indian origin- Admissions are managed by DASA-Direct Admission of Students Abroad.
