Marine engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the design, construction, and operation of marine vessels such as boats, ships, and submarines.

It also includes the design and construction of other water structures like harbours, ports, and docks. Marine engineering is also concerned with the vessels internal functional systems like electrification, steering, and additional mechanisms.

Therefore, we can say that marine engineering is an amalgamation of various other engineering speciality courses:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Computer Engineering

Often marine engineering is confused with maritime engineering. However, the two are different streams of engineering covering different aspects of the ocean.

While marine engineering is concerned with the design and construction of ocean vessels and structures, maritime engineering is concerned with the construction of structures in the oceanic environment and usually pertains to the transmission of oil, natural gas, and electricity.

Is Marine Engineering the Right Choice for You?

Students at the threshold of budding careers are met with wide choices when it comes to courses and subjects. Engineering is a popular field among students.

However, engineering itself has innumerable choices with several colleges adding new and unique courses every year. Marine engineering is a choice of engineering that students can opt for.

Before deciding whether marine engineering is the right choice for you, let’s look at some of the skills and attributes that you must possess to make a great career in the field of marine engineering.

It is pertinent to note that possessing these skills is not a prerequisite to opting for the marine engineering course. It is only a boost to the course. You can also develop these skills while pursuing the marine engineering course.

1. Communication Skills

Like any other course in engineering, good communication skills are always an advantage. With good communication skills, you can get the message right across without having to try too hard.

Prospects After Completing Marine Engineering Course

Marine Engineering

After completion of the marine engineering undergraduate course, students can look for job opportunities and pursue a course in postgraduate marine engineering.

Marine engineering job opportunities are plenty. Marine engineers can get opportunities to work on ships or ocean vessels. They can get absorbed in various job profiles such as:

  • Chief Engineer
  • Design Engineer
  • Naval Officer
  • Maintenance Engineer
  • Structural Engineer
  • Dock Engineer
  • Equipment Designer and other similar job profiles

A marine engineer employed on the sea must pass several stages before achieving the post of Chief engineer. Usually, marine engineers start their careers with training as junior or 5th junior engineer.

With years of training and successful passing of internal examinations, the junior engineers are promoted to the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd positions as engineers, before finally achieving the Chief engineering post.

The average base salary of a marine engineer in India is around Rs 811760 per annum. However, a marine engineering salary is based on years of experience and other external factors.

Conclusion

The demand for marine engineering is on the rise. Students are now finding lucrative job opportunities in the marine sector.
